Quick Take
- Web3 Gaming Holds Ground, But Loses Share: Daily active wallets grew slightly to 4.9 million in May, yet gaming’s overall market dominance slipped to 19.4% from April’s 21%.
- Funding Hits Record Low: Web3 gaming investments dropped to just $9 million in May, down from over $220 million per month in late 2024.
- Legacy Publishers Stay the Course: Despite market contractions, publishers like Sega, Nexon, and Sony continue to develop blockchain-connected projects.
Web3 gaming retained its lead as the most active sector in the decentralized app space in May 2025, with over 4.9 million daily unique active wallets (UAWs). According to DappRadar’s latest report with the Blockchain Game Alliance, that’s a slight increase from April’s numbers, suggesting the user base is stabilizing even as market sentiment remains mixed.
However, gaming’s overall market dominance dipped again, down from 21% to 19.4%, continuing a downward trend from January’s peak of 27.8%. This shows that although players are still logging in, Web3 gaming is losing share relative to other emerging categories like DeFi, SocialFi, and AI-powered dapps.
Funding Hits New Low at $9 Million
The investment landscape paints a more concerning picture. Total Web3 gaming investments fell to just $9 million in May, the lowest recorded so far in 2025. For comparison, November and December 2024 saw over $220 million each in gaming investments.
Two deals accounted for all of May’s activity:
- Oncade raised $4 million for infrastructure targeting game distribution
- Voya Games closed a $5 million round for user acquisition as Craft World prepares to launch on Ronin
The sharp drop in capital flow reflects rising investor caution. It also explains the wave of project shutdowns across the sector.

A Mixed Map of Ecosystem Winners and Losers
The leaderboard by chain activity continues to shift. Sei Network gained momentum with a 27% rise in UAWs, now hosting 43 games, 13 of which each draw 50,000+ weekly users. Its titles Hot Spring and Archer Hunter performed well. Aptos climbed 22%, while Core grew 15%, rounding out the list of growth leaders.
In contrast, opBNB and Ronin Network, previous category frontrunners, both saw a decline. Ronin’s daily user count dropped by 25% from April, and opBNB lost 5%.
This fragmentation highlights a shift in player engagement from established ecosystems toward smaller, mobile-first platforms that prioritize faster deployment and low-friction onboarding.
Shutdowns Reflect Industry’s Harsh Reality
2025 has already forced a reality check on blockchain gaming. Well-funded projects like Nyan Heroes, Ember Sword, and The Mystery Society have shut down. Many of these teams raised millions via token and NFT sales, only to struggle with development cycles that failed to deliver playable content or scalable economic systems.
The core issue lies in unsustainable models: capital raised is often funneled into marketing or speculative drops instead of gameplay iteration. Once interest fades, the product collapses. As the DappRadar report notes, Web3 still lacks a blueprint for long-term game viability.
Web2 IPs and Legacy Publishers Still Testing the Waters
Despite the pullback, traditional game publishers are not retreating. Nexon launched MapleStory Universe with on-chain integrations. Sega, Ubisoft, and Netmarble remain actively engaged. Sony continues to develop its Layer-2 protocol Soneium, and other familiar IPs like Ragnarok, Battle of Three Kingdoms, and EVE Online are expanding into the blockchain ecosystem.
These projects point to a longer-term confidence in Web3 infrastructure, even if the games themselves aren’t ready for mass adoption.
What to Expect in June 2025
The launch calendar for June is stacked with early access tests, TGE events, and feature rollouts. Highlights include:
- FIFA Rivals went live June 12 via Mythical Chain, in partnership with Adidas
- The Bornless and Sparkball are playable through Steam Next Fest
- Tokyo Beast launched on June 8 with a $1M tournament roadmap
- EVE Frontier, BloodLoop, Seraph, and Gods Unchained are all staging new releases or expansions
- Dininho Fun World began its play-to-airdrop event with $RAWR on Ronin
This activity shows that pipeline momentum is building, even if it’s not yet reflected in investment metrics.

Web3 Gaming Isn’t Dead, It’s Rebooting
May 2025 delivered a contradictory snapshot of Web3 gaming. User activity is holding strong, but dominance is slipping and funding is drying up. The shutdowns of multiple high-profile games reflect a system in flux, still looking for sustainable models.
Yet with top chains like Sei growing fast and legacy publishers expanding into blockchain ecosystems, the foundation for growth remains intact. The next stage will depend on more than wallet counts and it’ll require games that last longer than a token cycle.
