Quick Take
- Civitas is migrating to Immutable zkEVM for gasless trades, EVM compatibility, and scale
- The move sets up smart contract upgrades and IMX integration for its NFT collections
- The studio joins games like Tokyo Beast on Immutable’s growing Layer-2 ecosystem
Civitas, a city-building MMO that blends 4X strategy with blockchain ownership, is moving to Immutable zkEVM as it prepares for broader rollout and on-chain gameplay. The shift signals a major infrastructure move as the Unreal Engine-powered game pushes toward gasless interactions, scalable NFT systems, and ecosystem interoperability.
Developed by Directive Games, Civitas is designed to let players build persistent civilizations across web, mobile, and desktop platforms while owning every part of their land, buildings, and governance. By migrating to Immutable’s Ethereum-compatible L2, the team says it will reduce backend complexity and cut fees, giving players a smoother experience while supporting more ambitious game systems under the hood.
“We are excited to announce that Civitas is officially moving to Immutable zkEVM, powered by Polygon,” the team wrote in an update this week. “This partnership with Immutable gives us the foundation to scale faster, more securely, and with deeper player ownership.”
Immutable zkEVM offers full EVM compatibility, low-cost transactions, and native integration with the broader Immutable platform, including its Passport login system and token infrastructure. According to Civitas, that will allow for gas-free trading, new NFT collections, and more seamless market integrations. Smart contract migrations and Passport wallet support are already in the works.
The game’s current NFT collection, Chosen of Civitas, will remain on Ethereum L1 but gain cross-compatibility with Immutable zkEVM assets. This includes access to future airdrops, upgrades, and in-game interoperability between L1 and L2 assets.
Civitas now joins other top games on Immutable, including strategy auto-battler Tokyo Beast. The move also gives Directive Games a clearer path to token-enabled governance and marketplace economy systems it teased in early whitepaper drafts.
More technical details around the Immutable integration, Passport onboarding, and gameplay features are expected in the coming weeks.
About Civitas
Civitas is a 4X MMO strategy game developed by Directive Games, built for web, mobile, and desktop using Unreal Engine 5. Players take on the role of digital citizens, managing land, harvesting resources, constructing cities, and forming subDAO-led communities. Players manage town happiness, strategic Chosen leaders, and layered land ownership in a system inspired by games like Civilization and Eve Online. With deep economic layers, AR integrations, and a focus on player ownership through NFTs and future token mechanics, Civitas aims to deliver a large-scale, persistent world where every decision shapes the evolution of the game’s civilization.
