Quick Take
- Pirate Nation and its Apex and Boss chains will shut down within 30 days
- Players can burn items for Plunder Certificates during a final two-week event
- Founder’s Pirates NFTs receive last $PIRATE allocation before shifting to identity role
Proof of Play announced it will sunset Pirate Nation, the fully onchain game it launched as a showcase for its infrastructure and verifiable random number generator (vRNG) technology. The studio said that while the community has remained dedicated, the game has not attracted a large enough audience to sustain continued investment.
Pirate Nation will close along with its Apex and Boss chains in 30 days. Proof of Play described the dual-chain setup as unsustainable from a cost perspective and said its focus is shifting toward positive cashflow products. “We love Pirate Nation and believe we developed great onchain tech that was proved out through the game,” the company wrote. “The demand for the fully onchain version of Pirate Nation simply isn’t there to sustain operation indefinitely.”
Earlier this summer, CEO Amitt Mahajan called play-to-earn “fundamentally broken” and confirmed that Pirate Nation’s token rewards would end with Season 3 of Infinite Tides. At the time, Proof of Play said it would no longer give away $PIRATE tokens to players who were not aligned with the studio’s long-term goals, and that future focus would shift toward building profitable, accessible products with blockchain complexity hidden from the end user.
Some features of Pirate Nation will carry forward through the Proof of Play Arcade on Abstract, which the studio says allows game mechanics to be reused and adapted across different chains in the future. Proof of Play added that it wants its products to be broadly accessible and fun, with blockchain abstracted away from the end user experience.
To close out the game, a two-week event will let players burn their in-game items for Plunder Certificates, which can be redeemed for future rewards. Founder’s Pirates NFT holders will receive one final allocation of $PIRATE tokens. Afterward, the NFTs will shift into community identity assets without further claims.
The company said this transition will simplify its ecosystem and strengthen $PIRATE as the central alignment token. Pirate Nation originally launched with free Founder’s Pirates NFTs and token-based incentives, reflecting the earlier industry standard for play-to-earn games. Proof of Play now says its resources will be better spent on a single token system and sustainable business lines, signaling the end of its fully onchain experiment with Pirate Nation.
