Wildcard will be available to play for free from October 13 to 20 during Steam Next Fest, giving players a first look at its 2v2 collectible card action gameplay. Following the demo window, the game will enter Early Access on October 21, marking the start of its live development cycle with community input.
A 2v2 Card-Based Arena Experience
Developed by Playful Studios, the team behind Words With Friends and Lucky’s Tale, Wildcard mixes collectible card strategy with real-time arena combat. Players select a Champion, each with unique abilities, and craft a deck of creatures and spells to summon during intense 2v2 matches.
Victory depends on teamwork and timing. Every Champion’s playstyle shapes not only their deck but their partner’s strategy, creating a mix of tactical coordination and fast-paced action that defines the Wildcard format.
Backed by $9 Million Fundraise
Wildcard and its partner platform Thousands.tv recently announced a $9 million funding round led by Arbitrum Gaming Ventures and Paradigm. The funds will support game development, Web3 integrations, and the expansion of Thousands.tv, a blockchain-powered streaming platform that connects players and creators through onchain incentives.
Founded by Paul and Katy Drake Bettner, both studios operate from McKinney, Texas, and have previously generated over $800,000 in May revenue through early ecosystem activity. The Bettner duo plan to close the final $2.5 million portion of the round in the coming weeks.
Building an Onchain Game Ecosystem
Wildcard’s blockchain layer includes Wildpass NFTs and the upcoming $WC token, designed for in-game ownership, trading, and governance. The system runs on Ethereum, giving players an onchain identity that links gameplay achievements with long-term participation in the game’s economy.
With its Steam debut and growing creator ecosystem, Wildcard is positioning itself as one of the first competitive card-action titles to bridge traditional gaming audiences with Web3 technology.
