Quick Take
- Ronin will upgrade to an Ethereum Layer-2 by 2026, targeting faster, secure gamified experiences
- Proof-of-Distribution will replace validator rewards with builder-focused $RON incentives
- L2 shift includes plans to expand payments use in emerging markets starting Q4 2025
Ronin is officially transitioning from a gaming-focused Ethereum sidechain to a full Ethereum-aligned Layer-2, with a roadmap pointing toward faster performance, expanded use cases, and a new staking model designed to reward builders. The upgrade, dubbed “Ronin’s Homecoming,” will unfold in two phases through mid-2026, repositioning the network as a central hub for crypto gaming and gamified consumer apps on Ethereum.
The announcement comes after years of development around Ronin’s custom Layer-1 architecture, which launched in 2021 to support Axie Infinity. Now, the team at Sky Mavis is preparing the chain for deeper alignment with Ethereum’s scaling ecosystem.
A Return to Ethereum
Ethereum’s current state played a key role in the decision to migrate. With Layer-2 infrastructure maturing and data availability costs dropping, Ronin’s team says the time is right to inherit Ethereum’s security guarantees while scaling its reach.
The upgrade will integrate Ronin as an Ethereum L2 with faster transactions, up to 12 times quicker, and a revamped economic model. Ethereum-native tooling and users are expected to follow, as Ronin strengthens its role as what the team describes as Ethereum’s “gamification engine.”
According to Ronin, the transition won’t affect the use of $RON for gas fees. ETH will not be required by users. Any Ethereum settlement costs will be handled on the backend by the protocol, likely via a data availability provider funded through the Ronin treasury.
Proof-of-Distribution and New Staking Model
A core feature of the shift is a complete overhaul of how staking rewards are allocated. Currently, $RON emissions reward validators. Under the new system, those rewards will shift toward contributors defined as builders actively developing apps or games in the ecosystem.

This new model, called Proof-of-Distribution (PoD), introduces a builder scoring mechanism to determine reward allocations. Builder Scores will be calculated using both on-chain activity such as gas usage, revenue, and TVL, and off-chain metrics like impressions and engagement.
Contributors can also become Stake Managers, guiding staker rewards toward projects with high performance scores. Regular validators have the option to transition into this role or have their stake redirected to a general Stake Manager selected by the network’s Governing Validators.
The update is designed to direct capital toward productive contributors rather than passive node operators, aligning with Ronin’s long-term goal of building a self-sustaining ecosystem rooted in crypto gaming.
Expanding Beyond Games
While Ronin built its foundation with crypto games like Axie Infinity, Pixels, and Ragnarok Landverse, the L2 upgrade opens the door to other gamified sectors. These include consumer apps, tokenized collectibles, and financial tools with game-like mechanics.
Ronin currently ranks among the most active chains in crypto gaming. The network has seen over 31 million Ronin Wallet downloads, $4.2 billion in trading volume on its native Axie marketplace, and over $45 million in NFT volume from third-party collections.

New apps like Jin’s Fortune Spin, a blind box experience, are beginning to showcase broader use cases for the network’s gamification layer. According to Ronin’s team, the app generated $500,000 in revenue within a week of launch.
Payments and Emerging Markets
The roadmap includes a payments initiative launching in Q4 2025, targeting users in the Philippines and other high-adoption countries across Southeast Asia and Latin America. Ronin’s presence in these regions is already strong due to Axie Infinity’s user base.
The initiative will focus on three verticals: saving, spending, and eventually remittances. It will be led by Sky Mavis and is part of Ronin’s strategy to expand beyond gaming into real-world financial use.
As a Layer-2, Ronin expects to capture increased transaction volume while returning 100% of gas fee revenue to the $RON community. The team projects total gas fees over the next five years could reach around 14.5 million $RON, representing roughly 3x growth by 2028 compared to 2025.

Timeline for Launch
The full upgrade to Ethereum Layer-2 will complete in two stages:
- Q4 2025: Ronin-powered payments launch in the Philippines
- Q1–Q2 2026: Final hardfork and L2 upgrade complete, Proof-of-Distribution goes live
Governing Validators are currently reviewing the upgrade proposal. No immediate action is required from users or stakers. Builder Score calculations and the final staking structure are expected to be detailed in upcoming updates.
